Technology has changed a great deal in the last few years and the skills we need have changed along with it. Although no one would use all of these technologies, we should be knowledgeable in what each of them is and how it could be/might be used in a classroom. Here is some detailed information about technology skills 16 through 20.

16.Video & Podcasting

A podcast, simply stated, is a webcast, a show that is broadcast over the web and is broken up into parts or episodes. Most podcasts are similar to news radio programs and deliver information on a regular basis. Types of podcasts include comedy shows, special music broadcasts or even gospel. Podcasts are most popular on Apple's iPod and iPhone devices, so the name podcast was coined. A podcast can be listened to from a number of different sources including your computer. Podcasts can be easily created in the classroom by teachers and students for uploading to the web or to other devices and there are numerous sites that have podcasts that can be accessed for free.

17.RSS Feeds

RSS (which, in its latest format, stands for "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as
blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
RSS content can be read using software called a "feed reader" or an "aggregator." The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds
A RSS feed is a website that generates a behind-the-scenes code in a language similar to HTML called XML. This code, usually referred to as a ‘feed’ makes it possible for readers to ‘subscribe’ to the content that is created on a particular weblog(website) so they no longer have to visit the blog/website itself to view new information. As is true with traditional syndication, the content comes to you instead of you going to get it, hence Real Simple Syndication.
You can use your e-mail if you have Outlook to set up these feeds. Then you just go to one place to see what is new on any number of websites. The power of this technology is mindboggling. You can now track many many websites and have the new information from those web sites sent to you.

18.   Mobile and Handheld Computing

Laptop initiatives in recent years have demonstrated that when each child has his own computer, educational gains are possible, but unfortunately, these programs are very expensive to implement. Kathy Schrock notes, however, that there is a "single type of personal electronic device that can be used for writing, computing, reading, graphing, presenting, record-keeping, photography, videotaping, surfing the Web, e-mailing, blogging, Web conferencing and instant messaging. This device has software available to support math, science, English, social studies, physical education, family and consumer science, music, drama, foreign languages – all for under US $500!" This device is a handheld computer.
Due to lower costs, increased functionality, and the availability of new software designed specifically for education, K–12 schools are now beginning to take a more serious look at handheld computing for teaching and learning, administrative tasks, and communication and collaboration. The potential for using handhelds in education can be limitless. Now is the time to for teachers to begin discovering whether or not these computing devices can be used to help fulfill the need for educational computing. They could easily be the answer to overcoming the problem of equity of use in the classroom and to creating access to educational technology.

19.Virtual Worlds

The following was taken from Wikipedia:
Virtual worlds represent a powerful new media for instruction and education that presents many opportunities but also some challenges.
[33] Persistence allows for continuing and growing social interactions, which themselves can serve as a basis for collaborative education. The use of virtual worlds can give teachers the opportunity to have a greater level of student participation. It allows users to be able to carry out tasks that could be difficult in the real world due to constraints and restrictions, such as cost, scheduling or location. Virtual worlds have the capability to adapt and grow to different user needs.  They can also be a good source of user feedback, the typical paper-based resources have limitations that Virtual Worlds can overcome.

Typically, educators create an online presence where students can interact, using their avatars to learn about new assignments or create projects that are viewable within the virtual world. For example, students taking a computer manufacturing class can log into a virtual world in which they are the inhabitants of a burgeoning village that needs their expertise for the construction of houses, furniture, machines, and other goods. A number of educational institutions are now running virtual classrooms and discussion sections in worlds like Second Life. The British Open University has a strong presence in Second Life, where it is developing social and community links for students as well as practicing teaching and learning.
