Compare and contrast with Newseum
by Jim McDermott

Newseum, “the world’s most interactive museum“, has a wonderful idea that brings tremendous value to literacy, social studies, current events, and just about any subject that gets reported as front page news ever!  They show you a map of the US (or you can click on any continent and go global) with a dot representing every major news outlet.  Hover over the dot and you see the front page of the newspaper of that city for today!  Click on it and you get a readable version of it!  A great way to use this in the classroom:  compare and contrast.  Compare and contrast how different publications feature the innauguration, Blagovitch’s impeachment, or any world news.  See how a newspaper in the Middle East reports on Iraq versus how we report on it.  Even in Science, when a science event becomes front page news, use this tool to compare and contrast how different countries view the impact (the Hadron collider).  Tremendous classroom application here so… Thanks to my colleages for always sharing.
