About Dr. Franchino
Dr. Robert Franchino is a former technology teacher and technology coordinator. For the past eleven years he has served as a school administrator responsible for technology integration at Eastview High School (one of the nation’s top high schools as rated by Newsweek Magazine and US News and World Report). Dr. Franchino's focus has been creating sustainable 21st initiatives in schools. His background in technology and strategic planning has assisted educators in creating opportunities to better understand information technology and subsequently implement in schools. This concentration allows teachers to more easily integrate technology into an existing curriculum. In addition, Robert has presented teaching concepts at the International Technology Education Association National conference as well as the National School Board Association’s Instructional Technology conference. Dr. Franchino also teaches graduate classes in the area of organizational culture, comprehensive planning, leadership, human resources, program evaluation and fiscal management. Most recently he has conducted research associated with the successful implementation of online learning in secondary schools.
Creating and Implementing SUSTAINABLE 21st Century Initiatives
Some studies have shown that more than half of the Information Technology projects undertaken by Fortune 500 companies do not succeed as planned. This notion can be equally as daunting in schools as teachers and leader strive to embrace 21st century technology initiatives. Often, these challenges are due to the lack of funding, training, support, integration strategies, or a resistance to embrace new technology. During this session, Dr. Franchino will offer suggestions, resources and examples to assist teachers and leaders in developing a technology-rich culture to create SUSTAINABLE 21st century initiatives. Attendees will leave the session with resources that can be used to directly implement new technology initiatives in their schools. Items covered in this session will include:
* Creating and managing teacher and student laptop programs.
* Embracing the use of student-owned cell phones, laptops and PDAs to
enhance instruction.
* Developing foundational technology expectations for faculty.
* Creating differentiated training options to meet the needs of all users.
* Creating accountability for technology standards in a "politically" acceptable fashion.
* Developing methods to effectively utilize Technology Steering Teams to make data-driven-decisions.
* Understanding methods to disseminate technology hardware in a "politically" acceptable fashion (rather than based on seniority).
* Creating technology Request for Proposals (RFPs) to assist in school-wide technology decisions.
* Developing methods to productively use Pilot Programs.
* Developing creative methods to provide technology support without simply hiring more support personnel
