Prestigious HP Innovations in Education Grant Awards Announced (USA)
by Jim Vanides
Grant-recipient-announcement-days are always some of my favorite days. Last Friday was right up there - we just released the list of 2009 HP Innovations in Education grant recipients in the US that will receive a total of ~$9M in equipment, cash, and professional services. I am VERY excited about the 35 projects we are funding - and this is just the beginning...
I've long held that innovation in education is key to solving the "high tech talent pipeline challenge". Emerging evidence from the past 5 years of HP Technology for Teaching projects bears this out - excellent instruction combined with the right technologies is measurably improving student academic success. So I am VERY encouraged by the number of fantastic, creative, exciting proposals we received in response to our HP Innovations in Education call for proposals. Bravo to everyone who applied.
Of course this left us with the arduous task of selecting a few proposals among many deserving proposals. I equate this to looking for a few gold needles in a stack of shiny yellow needles. With the help of expert reviews and the International Society for Technology in Education, we announced this morning the US HPIIE recipients. Here are the overall Quick Facts:
2009 HP Innovations in Education - US Higher Ed
# of Institutions: | 10 Colleges & Universities from 9 States (includes 1 Community College) |
| Institution Size: | From 3,000 to 42,000 students |
| Estimated # of students impacted directly: | More than 7,400; more than 50% are under-represented |
| Total HP Social Investment (value at List) | More than $2.4M |
2009 HP Innovations in Education - US Secondary Ed
# of Institutions: | 25 Secondary School Systems from 11 States |
Institution Size: | From 1,600 to 300,000+ students |
Estimated # of students impacted directly: | More than 25,283; more than 60% are under-represented |
Total HP Social Investment (value at List) | More than $6.6M |
Similar announcements will be coming soon from other regions around the world. Overall, HP is investing more than $17 million in mobile technology, cash and professional development as part of the global 2009 HP Innovations in Education grant initiative.
It's all part of this wonderful journey we're on, where technology and excellent instruction combine to create powerful new learning experiences for students, especially in science, math, engineering , computer science. The success of Generation 2020, today's students in grades 6 to 16, depends on these innovations. So, you can see why this is one of my favorite days.
My heartiest congratulations to all of our 2009 HP Innovations in Education recipients! (see the list online or below)
