Budding Engineers Need Mentors
by Grant Zimmerman
Students need exposure to the ideas of science, technology, engineering, and math. They need mentors. They need experts to show them what engineering is and how it is used to build and create the products the world uses. I was lucky enough to have a dad who was an Industrial Engineer. Among the many responsibilities he worked with in his career, he was responsible for designing and inventing a new bottle packing system, patent #3,473,654 (1969) for Ball Brothers Corporation. What I remember most, however, is watching him build a HO scale railroad trestle for my new HO gauge train set. Watching him draw, measure, cut, and glue the balsa wood pieces into a gradual incline captured my attention. It didn’t hurt that he let me glue some of the pieces together. I had a mentor.Justin Beard, of I-CAN Network, needs your help. In his words:
