To Teach, or Not to Teach--That is the Question
by Art Titzel
" The enterprise that does not innovate ages and declines. And in a period of rapid change such as the present, the decline will be fast." --Peter Drucker
How do schools and teachers approach the challenges of technology, or how do schools and teachers approach the opportunities of technology?
Ponder the following questions to determine your approach to learning with technology:
- When students misuse learning technologies in school do they get banned from its use, or as educators do we use the mistake as an opportunity to teach a valuable lesson about (fill in the blank) ______________? (Possible answers include—responsibility to a community, ownership, respect, second chances)
- Do schools and teachers ban the use of personal learning devices, like cell phones, in class, or do educators use personal learning devices in class as a way to teach students (fill in the blank) ___________________? (Possible answers include—appropriate uses of technology, learning can take place anywhere and at any time, school is relevant to their lives)
- When innovative lessons, programs, or initiatives fail do educators go back to what worked in the past, or do educators recognize that failure is a part of the learning process and (fill in the blank)____________________? (Possible answers include—reflect, redesign, and forge ahead; reevaluate, redesign, and forge ahead; relearn, redesign, and forge ahead; not to innovate is to decline)
As educators we have a choice-- to teach, or not to teach. What will be your decision?
